Sam was supposed to take a treat to a party today, so we decided to make a family favorite, Skittle popcorn. Everyones favorite part is separating the Skittles. Don't worry, everyone washed their hands, ESPECIALLY Connor.
My big helper.
All done! It looks especially cute layered in cellophane bags to give away, or just all mixed together in a big bowl for a party!
Here's the recipe for anyone that's interested:
2-16 oz. bags Skittles-divided by color
1/2 cup butter for each color
1/4 cup light corn syrup for each color
12 cups popped popcorn for each color
Place on batch of popped popcorn into a very large, lightly greased bowl and set aside. In a saucepan, combine one color of Skittles, butter and corn syrup. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Boil for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. (Skittles will melt close to the end of the 5 minutes.) Pour over popcorn and mix thoroughly with a large greased spoon. Place coated popcorn into a greased 9X13 or larger baking pan. Bake at 200-250 degrees for 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes. Remove from pan and place on sheet of aluminum foil to cool. Repeat this process for each color. When all candy popcorn is cool, break apart and store in airtight container. Keeps well for up to two weeks in airtight containers.

Water doesn't get hot enough to wash away what is on Connor's hands.
Thanks so much for that recipe! I have never tried anything like it and it looks so fun. Can you use plain micro popcorn or do you have to use an air popper?
I always use air popped because one batch from my popper makes exactly 12 cups.
My favorite part is all of the healthy ingredients. Maybe you could add 2 cups of lard to the mix as well.
We are so making this. It might be the coolest treat ever. Thanks for the idea.
So do you just try to figure 12 cups of popcorn divided by the five colors of skittles to get the right amount?
Celeste, It's 12 cups for each color. So I guess 60 cups total!
